About the Opportunity

Currently, SBM has exciting opportunities available for multiple Civil Engineers and/or Civil Project Manager(s) to join our team in either of our London or Kitchener, ON offices on a full-time basis. Candidates will have working hours of 8am-5pm Monday-Thursday, and Fridays of 8am-2:30pm.

The Civil Engineer or Civil Project Manager will report to the Civil Division Manager and work on activities related to land development and municipal projects, including, but not limited to, the design of stormwater management quality and quantity controls, storm sewer design, sanitary sewer design, water distribution for civil engineering projects including subdivisions, site developments, and municipal road reconstruction projects.

Reporting to the Civil Division Manager, the Civil Engineer or Project Manager will be required to manage and lead projects, review (and seal, if applicable) their own and others' design work, direct and mentor the design team in coordination with other PLs for land development (private and public sector) projects across Ontario including subdivisions, apartment buildings, commercial developments, road reconstructions, parking lot replacements, etc. The candidates will work alongside other technologists, engineers, and project leads, while being the main point of contact with project stakeholders both internally and externally.

While no two days in these fast-paced roles will ever be the same, your more typical responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing Civil Engineering Design and Documents for land development and municipal projects such as subdivisions, site plans, road reconstructions, parking lot replacements, etc.
  • Reviewing designs and drawings to ensure accuracy, adequacy, and conformance to current standards
  • When required, coordinating/reviewing/assisting field staff with site investigations, general reviews of construction, and preparation of field review reports
  • Working within the project team environment from preliminary stages of the design through to completion
  • Conducting cost estimates and cost comparison of technical solutions
  • Designing civil infrastructure including site servicing, grading, stormwater management quantity and quality controls, including Best Management Practices (BMP) and Low Impact Development (LID), water mains, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, noise studies, etc.
  • Coordinating daily team priorities to achieve project milestones while collaborating with other project leads
  • When required, preparing/reviewing of tender/contract documents and acting as contract administrator

More About You

In order to qualify for the Civil Engineer or Civil Project Manager role, you'll need either a University Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or a related discipline, or a Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Architectural Technology or equivalent. It is preferred that candidates are registered with the PEO as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) but candidates will be considered if they are eligible for their P.Eng within 6 months or currently hold a C.E.T. or L.E.T. You will possess at least 4 years of experience in Civil Engineering, with a focus on consulting/design considered an asset. 

Candidates who do not possess a P.Eng. must have experience and interest in Project Management whereas candidates with a P.Eng. will be considered for a review engineer role if they do not have interest in Project Management. In summary, Project Management experience is preferred for engineer applicants but required for engineering technologist applicants.

You are an effective team builder, with a commitment to ongoing professional and personal growth, and a passion for learning. You are able to work effectively both in a team environment and independently while possessing the interpersonal skills to liaise with internal teams and external stakeholders. Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and AutoCAD suites is required, and preference will be given to candidates with Civil3D experience. Experience with provincial and local municipality design guidelines, the Ontario Building Code, other applicable Canadian Engineering standards, and applicable legislature such as the Planning Act is preferred.
